Program Information

Youth Recreational Sports Mission

is to provide a fun learning experience for young athletes. Teams are formed considering many priorities including attendance area, grade level, amount of youth that wish to participate, facility availability, and coach availability. Similar considerations are made when determining practice times and locations. It is important to know that practices and games can occur at any of our OCSD facilities. Please take time to read our coach & buddy request information. If you have a special consideration please submit it via email prior to the start of the season. These requests will be considered, but may not be granted.

FAQ

  • We recognize there are many reasons that a family may not have been able to register in time to be on a team. Unfortunately, our program has limited resources that we must operate within the confines of. These resources include coaches, referees, and gym space. We work hard to publish our registration open dates on our website and send flyers out to our entire community. Please visit our website and call our main office with any questions. 503-785-8035 ext 0.

  • Our program does not accept coach or buddy requests.

Allowing players to request a specific coach or team member causes difficulties in our programs when creating balanced and equally competitive teams. Requesting coaches and players often leads to certain teams having an unfair advantage throughout the season. Thus the decision was made 2021-2022 to not accept these requests. We have received considerable feedback from coaches and parents both in favor and against this decision. After the 2021-2022 seasons by and large everyone had an enjoyable season and teams were far more evenly matched than before.

In order to answer any questions you may have about why we made this decision and to address any concerns, please review the following comments and our explanations.

  • Every season, in every sport we would get complaints that certain teams were "stacked." Despite our best efforts to make teams even, when we allow teams to stay together or allow players to request coaches, some coaches do start to "put" teams together creating "stacked" teams. It happens. No, not every coach will do that, in fact, most coaches don't. But some do. So, if we allow a coach to put together a team of friends from the neighborhood or friends from school, how do we then not allow a coach to put together a team of "friends that all want to play together" on a team that the coach recruited? Or even a team that the kids themselves recruited? We can't.

  • Yes, they do, and for the most part, they will since they are likely playing with mostly peers from their school. However, often kids who are friends tend to be at the same skill level as each other. They are on the same football team together and the same basketball team.

In our experience, even when kids aren’t on the same team as their best friend they still have a great time when the adults around them have a positive attitude. Kids make new friends, improve their skills, and have fun.
